Answer

Creating a free personal account is required in some of our databases and is an option in others.

Databases like NetLibrary and MyiLibrary ebooks and audiobooks require a personal account in order to "check out" books in their online collections.

EBSCOhost databases and others, like JSTOR, have optional personal accounts that give you access to extra features, like: saving search results and getting email updates when there are new results for your search or when a journal you like releases a new issue.
